Managers get plenty of heat, little credit
Bruce Bochy's Giants started 2-7. Hot seat.

Manny Acta's Nationals opened 0-7. Hot seat. Fredi Gonzalez's Marlins were 11-1 but lost seven in a row. Hot seat.

The Yankee Stadium architect messed up. Too hitter-friendly. Sorry, Joe Girardi. Hot seat. The Mets' new yard is just the opposite: pitcher-friendly. Where's the hitting? Jerry Manuel, hot seat.

Cleveland's Eric Wedge, Colorado's Clint Hurdle, Houston's Cecil Cooper, Texas' Ron Washington, San Diego's Bud Black. Hot bench.

That's life in this pull-the-trigger-now, live-for-the-day, it's-a-sprint-not-a-marathon world of second-guessing by fans and media. Everyone knows more than the manager, who takes heat for players' failures and rarely gets credit for their successes.

Hardly anybody noticed Gonzalez when the Marlins were in their winning ways. Now that they're losing, he might as well be the poster child.

Based on the standings through the weekend, the Blue Jays are Baseball's best team, but who thanks Cito Gaston? It's all about Roy Halladay, Aaron Hill and Adam Lind.

Meantime, the Nationals are the worst team, and Acta has little job security. quot;I hope to be here for the next 20 years, quot; said Acta, who's probably wondering if he'll last the next 20 days.

Winning masks a lot. Had Giants closer Brian Wilson preserved Sunday's 4-1 lead in Arizona, the angle would have been Matt Cain's seven solid innings and Pablo Sandoval's career-high four hits. But Wilson blew it, leaving Bochy open to criticism for his strategic maneuvers.

Managers know the drill. Firings are in the job description. But in April? Apparently, it's never too early to assign blame. In 1985, George Steinbrenner canned Yogi Berra after 16 games.

The Boss no longer calls the shots in the Bronx. Now it's up to his son Hank.

Girardi hopes he's a little more patient than his old man.
