The Nationals have every reason to roll over and play dead this September, their season long since having derailed. But this team is showing no signs of doing that, no matter their record or position in the standings. That much was made clear Sunday, when Washington twice rallied in the final two innings against the Marlins, finally earning a 5-4 victory on Ryan Zimmerman's walk-off homer. It represented a rare high point for a Nationals club that is well on its way to another 100-loss season and was riding an eight-game losing streak entering Sunday's game.
"We're never going to quit," Zimmerman said. "We play to the last out. You never know what's going to happen. We're going to play hard to the end, no matter how many games we lose or how many games we're back. That's the way we've been taught to play." NATIONALS 5, MARLINS 4: Washington stormed back in furious fashion, scoring two runs in the eighth to tie, then giving the lead back in the top of the ninth before rallying to win in the bottom of the inning thanks to homers by Willie Harris and Ryan Zimmerman. After Mike Morse's two-run, pinch-hit single tied the game in the eighth, closer Mike MacDougal surrendered two runs in the top of the ninth, paving the way for the Nationals to lose their ninth straight game. But Harris responded by clubbing Leo Nunez's first pitch in the bottom of the inning over the right-field fence. Cristian Guzman followed with an infield single, and then Zimmerman belted a 1-1 changeup to left-center to give the Nationals a dramatic victory.
