Washington Nationals Inside Pitch 2009-05-04
The Cardinals had only one scheduled trip to Washington this season. After Sunday's game at Nationals Park was rained out, they may need to make a special trip back to the District of Columbia.

Despite efforts to get their series finale in, the Nationals couldn't overcome a persistent rain and were forced to postpone the afternoon contest.

No makeup date was announced, and it's going to be difficult to find a common off day that works for both teams. The only two possibilities are June 15 and July 23. Each would require the Cardinals to go out of their way to fly into Washington for only one day. Each also would require a concession from the players union, which typically does not allow teams to play more than 20 consecutive days.

Because of all that, Nationals team president Stan Kasten said every effort was made Sunday to play the game.

"Yes, (Sunday) there's the extra consideration of them being in (Washington) for the last time, but that's really subordinate," Kasten said during the nearly two-hour delay. "If you can't play, you can't play. And if you can play, we will always try to play."
