Washington Nationals Inside Pitch 2009-05-07
The Nationals have tried overhauling their bullpen already this season. They may have to keep trying it until they finally find a combination that works.

Washington's bullpen was up to its old tricks again Wednesday night in Los Angeles, turning a 2-1 deficit against the Dodgers into a 10-3 loss thanks to a seven-run sixth inning that featured four walks, including one with the bases loaded.

The beleaguered relief corps now owns an 0-8 record, a 5.60 ERA and eight blown saves in 11 chances. And unless things get better in a hurry, more changes are likely on the way.

"We continue to work on it," manager Manny Acta said. "We're talking about it, and we're taking a look at the guys at Triple-A, and (acting general manager Mike Rizzo) is exploring possibilities. We're going to continue to work until it's better. Because we deserve better, and right now it's not giving us a chance."

DODGERS 10, NATIONALS 3: Competitive with baseball's best team for five innings, Washington wilted during a seven-run sixth that proved the difference in Wednesday's game. Nationals relievers Mike Hinckley and Logan Kensing combined to put five straight men on base during the fateful sixth, helping turn a one-run game into a rout. Washington lost for the 11th time in 13 road games this season.
