Washington Nationals Notes, Quotes 2009-02-12

Washington Nationals Notes, Quotes 2009-02-12
--1B/OF Adam Dunn agreed to a two-year, $20 million deal with the Nationals, according to multiple media reports. If he signs, he probably will end up as the team's first baseman, taking over a spot that has been occupied in recent seasons by injury-prone Nick Johnson and Dmitri Young. Dunn is also capable of playing the outfield, but the Nationals have a wealth of contenders for outfield spots.

--LHP Scott Olsen avoided arbitration by agreeing to a one-year, $2.8 million deal. Olsen was acquired by Washington from Florida in a November trade.

--RHP Shawn Hill, coming off arthroscopic elbow surgery, tossed a pain-free, 45-pitch mound session Saturday. The same day, he won his arbitration case and was awarded a $775,000 salary for 2009. The Nationals had offered him $500,000.

--LHP Odalis Perez signed a non-guaranteed, minor league contract, returning to the Nationals after a strong 2008. Perez, who joined the club last year on a similar deal, wound up going 7-12 with a 4.34 ERA and earned the nod to start on Opening Night. The 31-year-old will have to earn his starting spot again, but the club could use a veteran presence in its rotation, giving Perez a leg up heading into camp.

--INF Alex Cintron signed a non-guaranteed, minor league contract with an invitation to big-league camp. The 30-year-old infielder is a career .277 hitter who can play shortstop and could have the inside track to a spot on the Nationals' bench. Though Cristian Guzman is locked in as the starter at shortstop, Washington needs a capable backup who could handle the job for a prolonged period if Guzman got hurt.

--C Javier Valentin signed a non-guaranteed, minor league contract with an invitation to big-league camp. The 33-year-old has spent parts of 10 seasons in the major leagues and owns a career .251 average. He'll compete with C Wil Nieves for the No. 2 catching job behind Jesus Flores.

--RHP Joel Hanrahan won't face any stiff competition for the Nationals' closing job this spring. Though Hanrahan had never closed prior to last August -- and had never pitched in relief before last season -- he wasn't fazed by the role when thrown into it. And with no real viable alternatives within the organization, the Nationals appear content to let Hanrahan have the job.

--OF Austin Kearns will make more money ($8 million) than any other player on the Nationals' roster in 2009, but that doesn't ensure him a spot in the starting lineup. After a dismal season in which he hit .217 while battling several injuries, Kearns will have to earn a regular job in an open competition with fellow OFs Lastings Milledge, Elijah Dukes and Josh Willingham. Kearns says he's healthy heading into spring training and understands he must prove to the organization he deserves to start again.

BY THE NUMBERS: 0 -- Nationals players who appeared in more than 140 games in 2008.

QUOTE TO NOTE: "If his No. 11 doesn't get retired on our outfield wall some day, I'll be really disappointed." -- General manager Jim Bowden, on 3B Ryan Zimmerman.
