--RHP Craig Stammen had surgery Sunday to remove a bone spur in his right elbow, a procedure that will sideline the rookie six weeks and thus end his season. Stammen admitted he had been pitching in pain for some time but felt he could gut his way through it. The Nationals felt it wasn't worth the risk and decided to shut the 25-year-old down. He's expected to be 100 percent healthy well in advance of spring training. --OF Austin Kearns' bruised right thumb has not yet healed to the point where he's able to comfortably swing a bat. Kearns has been out since Aug. 4, and he's running out of time to make it back before the end of this season. Unless he makes significant progress in the next week, interim manager Jim Riggleman said the veteran outfielder likely won't play again this year. BY THE NUMBERS: 16 -- Quality starts this season by John Lannan, more than twice as many as any other member of the Nationals' rotation. QUOTE TO NOTE: "It's going to be a real challenge. It's going to be tough. It's the big leagues. It's supposed to be tough. But we've got to find a way to scratch out wins." -- Interim manager Jim Riggleman, as his Nationals were mired in a recent seven-game losing streak.
