Nationalsclub.com | Washington Nationals News, nationals Scores, Game Recaps & Commentary - --RHP Shawn Hill was examined by Dr. James Andrews in Pensacola, Fla., and the surgeon recommended arthroscopic surgery to clean out bony buildup in Hill's elbow. He will have his right forearm, which caused him pain all season, examined next week at the University of Alabama-Birmingham and could have the surgery if no further problems are found with his forearm, Nationals team orthopedist Ben Shaffer said.
--SS Alberto Gonzalez will rejoin the Nationals next week when major league rosters expand to 40, manager Manny Acta said. Gonzalez has been out with a left hamstring strain since Aug. 5 but has been able to play nine innings at Class AAA Columbus (Ohio). --CF Lastings Milledge has been hit by 13 pitches this season, tied for second most in the National League, but doesn't plan to change his batting stance. "It's just part of the game, you know? Nobody's going to run me out of there," Milledge said. "One of these times, they might catch me and put me out for a while, but when I come back, I'm going to be right there. They can do whatever they want to do. That's just how I hit."
--LHP Odalis Perez won his sixth game of the year and posted his fourth quality start in five outings. Perez credited an improved fastball with his success, saying he's been able to throw it in situations where teams were sitting on his off-speed pitches before. "(Earlier this year), when I was ahead in the count, I was throwing my off-speed (pitch)," Perez said. "Now, it's totally different. I'm able to throw my fastball, my sinker, in situations like that. It might be a reason why, in the last five starts, I've been pitching well."
--3B Ryan Zimmerman drove in two runs with a single to center and a sacrifice fly, giving him four RBIs in his last three games. In his last 10 games, Zimmerman is batting .317 with five RBIs and four extra-base hits. "There's a difference between getting healthy and getting back to where you were," said Zimmerman, who missed nearly two months with a labral tear in his left shoulder. "I've been happy with what I've done. I was getting my hits, but they weren't doubles, homers, things like that. This last week, I've started to feel like I was feeling before the shoulder injury."
BY THE NUMBERS: 19 -- Times the Nationals had been shut out through Aug. 24, most in the major leagues.
QUOTE TO NOTE: "A lot of guys say when you're tired you have your best day. I've heard that so many times, and it's never really happened to me before until today." -- LF Willie Harris, who hit a grand slam and a homer and drove in a career-high six runs Friday afternoon after getting little sleep following a late-night flight from Philadelphia to Chicago.
