Nationalsclub.com | Washington Nationals News, nationals Scores, Game Recaps & Commentary - The Nationals' attempts to upgrade their roster haven't slowed down since general manager Jim Bowden resigned on March 1. Acting general manager Mike Rizzo signed LHP Joe Beimel to a one-year deal on March 22, adding another veteran to the group Bowden acquired in the offseason (OFs Adam Dunn and Josh Willingham, as well as LHP Scott Olsen). They also saw the emergence of RHPs Jordan Zimmermann and Shairon Martis, appointed CF Lastings Milledge their new leadoff hitter and watched Anderson Hernandez move toward becoming the everyday second baseman (before he landed on the DL).
PLAYER NOTES: --LHP John Lannan's first career opening-day start didn't go nearly as well as the 24-year-old lefty hoped. Lannan was roughed up by the Marlins for six runs and six hits in only three innings, earning an early exit from one of the biggest starts of his young career. Lannan, who relies on pinpoint control, dug himself into a huge hole by throwing first-pitch strikes to only five of 16 batters faced. He paid the price for it, allowing a home run to 1B Jorge Cantu on a 3-0 pitch and to OF Jeremy Hermida on a 2-1 pitch. "You really can't work with much when you're 2-0, 3-0 to everybody," he said. "I felt fine warming up. I was excited, but I wasn't anxious. I just couldn't execute."
--OF Adam Dunn wasted no time making his presence known in the Nationals' rebuilt lineup. The big slugger, who signed a two-year, $20 million contract in February, clubbed a towering, three-run homer in Monday's opening-day loss to the Marlins. It was the fourth time in five years that Dunn has homered on opening day, during which time he's hit six total homers.
--LHP Scott Olsen's first start as a National will come against his former team, but he is trying not to think much about that. Olsen, acquired from the Marlins over the winter in a trade, will start Tuesday at Dolphin Stadium against many of his old friends. "It has a significance in me being in my own bed," the 25-year-old said. "That's about it. Once the game starts, we're not friends anymore for the two, three hours we're out there. Off the field, we'll hang out and be friends again."
--OF Lastings Milledge had a rough opening day. Getting his first shot at leading off, Milledge grounded out on the first pitch of the season and finished 0-for-4 with two strikeouts in the Nationals' 12-6 loss to the Marlins. The center fielder, who turned 24 on Sunday, also watched as 3B Emilio Bonifacio's fourth-inning drive sailed over his head and to the wall for an eventual inside-the-park homer.
