Washington Nationals Roster Report 2009-04-21
After starting the season 0-6, Washington's first homestand of the year wasn't much more pleasant. The Nationals sent CF Lastings Milledge to the minors April 14 and got rid of three relievers April 19 after three blown leads turned what could have been a weekend sweep of the Marlins into three losses.

PLAYER NEWS:

--RHP Jordan Zimmermann enjoyed an impressive major-league debut Monday night against the Braves, allowing two runs on six hits in six innings and needing only 72 pitches to get that far. Fifty-one of his pitches were strikes, and he pitched out of two jams with two men on base.

--3B Ryan Zimmerman extended his hitting streak to 10 games with a single off Derek Lowe in the fourth inning Monday night. Zimmerman, who signed a five-year, $45 million contract extension Monday, is hitting .304 in that time with two homers and 10 RBI.

--C Jesus Flores went 2-for-2 with a walk and two RBI, including a single in the sixth inning that scored the game-winning run. Flores, who hit .370 with runners in scoring position last year, had only been batting .222 in those situations before Monday night. "I know in the beginning of the year, I've been struggling a little bit," Flores said. "I've started trusting myself, and I've looked better at the plate."

--RHP Kip Wells made his debut with the Nationals, pitching a scoreless seventh inning after Jordan Zimmermann was lifted for a pinch hitter. The 31-year-old Wells, who signed with the team during spring training, had been starting for Class AAA Syracuse (N.Y.) before being called up Sunday. "He threw the ball well," manager Manny Acta said. "He was very aggressive with the first two hitters, pounded the strike zone and got out of the inning, no sweat. That was good work."

MEDICAL WATCH:

SS Cristian Guzman (strained left hamstring) went on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to April 14.

2B/OF Willie Harris (strained left oblique muscle) went on the 15-day disabled list April 13. There was no timetable for his return.

OF Roger Bernadina (broken right ankle) went on the 15-day disabled list April 19. He had surgery April 18, and he will miss a minimum of two months before beginning a rehab assignment.

1B Dmitri Young (strained back and hip) went on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to April 1. Young, who has been working himself back into shape while trying to manage diabetes, will remain at extended spring training in Viera, Fla. The Nationals hope he'll be ready to go on a rehab assignment at some point in late April and perhaps return to the big-league roster soon after that.

RHP Terrell Young (inflamed right shoulder) went on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to March 27. He started a throwing program at extended spring training in early April.

LHP Matt Chico (Tommy John elbow surgery in July 2008) went on the 60-day disabled list March 28. He will miss at least the first half of the season.
