Washington Nationals Roster Report 2009-04-25
After starting the season 0-6, Washington's first homestand of the year wasn't much more pleasant. The Nationals sent CF Lastings Milledge to the minors April 14 and got rid of three relievers April 19 after three blown leads turned what could have been a weekend sweep of the Marlins into three losses.

PLAYER NEWS:

--RHP Scott Olsen had his second straight quality start, allowing three runs (two earned) in six innings of work. Olsen's fastball still didn't exceed 90 mph, but his slider looked as sharp as it's been in any of his starts this season.

--1B Nick Johnson continued his early-season tear, hitting his first homer of the year with a solo shot off Johan Santana in the fifth. Johnson reached for an outside fastball, hitting it 340 feet just inside the left-field foul pole. The shot snapped Santana's scoreless streak at 17 innings.

--3B Ryan Zimmerman ran his hit streak to 13 games with a single off Johan Santana in the fourth inning. Zimmerman went 1-for-3 with a walk, and is hitting .304 during his streak with two homers, 10 RBIs and five walks.

--1B Dmitri Young, on the 15-day disabled list with back and hip injuries, remains at extended spring training in Viera, Fla., with no timetable for his return. The Nationals don't want to send Young out on a minor league rehab assignment until they are confident he can play nine innings in the field every day. So far, Young hasn't been able to do that over a prolonged stretch.

MEDICAL WATCH:

LHP Joe Beimel (strained left hip flexor) went on the 15-day disabled list April 21.

SS Cristian Guzman (strained left hamstring) went on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to April 14. He will go on a minor league rehab assignment but should be back after missing just 15 days.

2B/OF Willie Harris (strained left oblique muscle) went on the 15-day disabled list April 13. He was set to begin a rehab assignment with Class AAA Syracuse during the week of April 20-26.

OF Roger Bernadina (broken right ankle) went on the 15-day disabled list April 19. He had surgery April 18, and he will miss a minimum of two months before beginning a rehab assignment.

1B Dmitri Young (strained back and hip) went on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to April 1. He remained at extended spring training in Viera, Fla., in late April with no timetable for his return to the majors.

RHP Terrell Young (inflamed right shoulder) went on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to March 27. He started a throwing program at extended spring training in early April.

LHP Matt Chico (Tommy John elbow surgery in July 2008) went on the 60-day disabled list March 28. He will miss at least the first half of the season.
