Washington Nationals Roster Report 2009-04-30

Washington Nationals Roster Report 2009-04-30
The Nationals avoided a sweep with an 8-1 win over the Mets on Sunday, but they have continued to struggle with the same issues that led them to 13 losses in their first 16 games this season. Washington's remade bullpen hasn't blown a save since the Nationals sent three players to the minors on April 19, but a lack of productive hitting and a spate of errors led to back-to-back one run losses on Wednesday and Friday. The topper was an 8-2 loss to the Mets on Saturday, when the fly ball Elijah Dukes lost in the sun led to three Mets runs.

PLAYER NEWS:

--RHP Jason Bergmann was optioned to Class AAA Syracuse to make room for RHP Logan Kensing, whom the Nationals acquired in a trade with the Marlins late Tuesday night. Bergmann, who had a 3.60 ERA in three appearances, had been called up 10 days ago in a bullpen shakeup, and he wasn't pleased with the move, manager Manny Acta said. "We don't want anybody to be happy when they are sent down," Acta said. "The move wasn't about Bergmann. It was about making room for Logan over here. Bergmann has to continue to throw the ball over there like he has been throwing it. I'm sure we'll see him again."

--OF Roger Bernadina, who had right ankle surgery on April 18, was transferred from the 15-day to the 60-day disabled list. The move cleared a spot on the 40-man roster for newly acquired RHP Logan Kensing.

--SS Cristian Guzman rejoined the Nationals after missing the last two weeks with a strained left hamstring, batting leadoff and playing shortstop in Wednesday's game against the Phillies. Guzman was hitting .515 in seven games before the injury. "He's been a bright spot for us the last three years," manager Manny Acta said. "He was swinging the bat well before he got hurt. It will be nice to have some stability on the field." He went 1-for-5.

--3B Ryan Zimmerman extended his hitting streak to 18 games with a double off Phillies RHP Brett Myers in the sixth inning. Zimmerman has the longest active streak in the major leagues. It's the longest the team has had since moving to Washington in 2005 and marks the strongest start to a season he's had in four years. Zimmerman is a career .248 hitter in March and April.

MEDICAL WATCH:

SS Cristian Guzman (strained left hamstring) went on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to April 14. He was activated April 29.

LHP Joe Beimel (strained left hip flexor) went on the 15-day disabled list April 21.

1B Dmitri Young (strained back and hip) went on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to April 1. He was expected to begin a 20-day rehab stint with Class AAA Syracuse in late April or early May.

OF Roger Bernadina (broken right ankle) went on the 15-day disabled list April 19, and he was transferred to the 60-day DL on April 29. He had surgery April 18, and he will miss a minimum of two months before beginning a rehab assignment.

RHP Terrell Young (inflamed right shoulder) went on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to March 27. He started a throwing program at extended spring training in early April.
