Nationalsclub.com | Washington Nationals News, nationals Scores, Game Recaps & Commentary - --RHP Shairon Martis improved to 5-0 with seven innings of one-run ball Wednesday against the Giants. The 22-year-old rookie hasn't received much attention, but he's impressed the Nationals with his poise and pitching prowess at such a young age. Martis has been a complete player, not just on the mound. He doubled Wednesday and is now hitting .267. He also dropped a successful sacrifice bunt. And he fields his position well.
--3B Ryan Zimmerman's hitting streak ended Wednesday at 30 games, but the budding star wasn't upset. He was happier that the Nationals snapped a two-game losing streak, beating the Giants 6-3 to cap an up-and-down road trip. "Would I love to get a hit every game? Sure," said Zimmerman, who went 0-for-3 with two walks. "I'm still going to try to get a hit every single game. But the fact that we won to end this West Coast trip .500 ... that's probably the best we've done on the West Coast in a while. We're growing up. We're getting better and we're doing things right. It's a step forward." --RHP Terrell Young, the top pick in the Rule 5 draft, has been returned to the Reds. Young, a hard-throwing reliever, injured his shoulder during spring training and began the year on the 15-day disabled list. He was rehabbing in Viera, Fla., but he cleared waivers and was sent back to his original organization. The Nationals get back $25,000 of the $50,000 they originally spent on Young.
MEDICAL WATCH:
OF Elijah Dukes (illness) was scratched from the lineup May 12. He returned to start May 13.
C Jesus Flores (bruised right shoulder) left the May 9 game, and he did not play May 10-13. He is day-to-day.
1B Dmitri Young (strained back and hip) went on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to April 1. He was expected to begin a 20-day rehab stint with Class AAA Syracuse in May.
OF Roger Bernadina (broken right ankle) went on the 15-day disabled list April 19, and he was transferred to the 60-day DL on April 29. He had surgery April 18, and he will miss a minimum of two months before beginning a rehab assignment.
LHP Matt Chico (Tommy John elbow surgery in July 2008) went on the 60-day disabled list March 28. He will miss at least the first half of the season.
