Nationalsclub.com | Washington Nationals News, nationals Scores, Game Recaps & Commentary - --C Jesus Flores was placed on the 15-day disabled list Friday, retroactive to May 10, with a strained right shoulder. Manager Manny Acta said the Nationals don't expect Flores to be out much longer than the 15 days he is required to be on the disabled list. Flores wasn't able to throw or hit on Friday, and the Nationals needed a second catcher for Saturday's doubleheader.
--OF Elijah Dukes strained his left hamstring in the seventh inning of Friday's loss to the Phillies and is day-to-day, manager Manny Acta said. "He could be fine by tomorrow," Acta said. --C Josh Bard was recalled from Class AAA Syracuse (N.Y.) to give Washington a second healthy catcher with Jesus Flores heading to the disabled list. Bard will split time with Wil Nieves while Flores is out. The fact that he is a switch hitter also gives the Nationals a versatile pinch-hitting option.
--RHP Logan Kensing was designated for assignment on Friday afternoon and RHP Jesus Colome was called up, the latest change in the Nationals' revolving bullpen. The Nationals acquired Kensing on April 29 in a trade with the Marlins, and manager Manny Acta said Kensing wants to stay in the team's system if he clears waivers. "Things just didn't work out," Acta said. "He was pitching behind in the count the whole time and he was working through some mechanical issues, and right now, with the state of our bullpen, he understands we just can't be hiding anybody right now."
--LHP Mike Hinckley, who was designated for assignment on May 7, cleared waivers and elected free agency, the Nationals said on Friday. An MLB.com report said Hinckley was close to signing with the Texas Rangers. He gave up five runs and walked 11 batters in 9 2/3 innings this year, after making the team out of spring training for the first time as a left-handed specialist.
MEDICAL WATCH:
